Bernice I. Kern, 94, a longtime resident of Muncy, died Friday, May 19, 2017 after a brief illness.

Born February 19, 1923, in Muncy, she was a daughter of the late Dewey and Elma (Lowe) Ritter.  Bernice and her husband, Robert R. “Chip” Kern, were married 59 years before his death on July 23, 2005.

Bernice was a self-employed, accomplished seamstress in the Muncy area for many years.

She was well-known for her wicked, irreverent sense of humor, including reading the obituary section in the daily paper, just to check and see if her name was listed.  Bernice was very opinionated on many topics and enjoyed a heated political debate.

Bernice was a member of the North Central Chapter 8 Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology and had a lifelong passion hunting for arrowheads.

Surviving are two sisters, Nancy Beatty, of Kane and Janice Zeisloft, of Millville; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Shirley Shultz and Angie Schively.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in Twin Hills Memorial Park, 3332 Lycoming Mall Rd, Muncy, with Rev. Robert W. Rice, of the Muncy Baptist Church, officiating.

The family suggests contributions in Bernice’s name be made to either Meow House, 314 Deckman Hollow Rd., Williamsport, PA 17701 or the Beckoning Cat Project, 1417 E. 3rd St., Williamsport, PA 17701.

The family is being assisted by Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy.
