Betty J. Mertz, 9/13/32-8/2/24
Northumberland
The most beautiful woman journeyed to Heaven on Aug. 2. She battled illness with the fight of her beloved Notre Dame Irish. We know she’s cheering on her team, her family, and her friends from above.
Betty was born on September 13, 1932 in Sunbury to Joseph and Grace (Krumbine) Koletar. As part of the “Lenker Avenue” gang, the Koletars were a force of Betty and her younger siblings, Joseph, Sally, John “Skip”, Francis “Fritz” (deceased), and Robert. Betty was proud of her Hungarian roots and had the Eastern European feistiness until her last breath. She graduated from Sunbury HS in 1950, and was a devout Catholic. Everyone who met Betty will remember her contagious laugh, captivating charm, gorgeous appearance, and classiness.
She was most proud of her grandchildren: Paul, Nicholas, Tamara, Tasha, Kati, Michael, and Derek, and 8 great-grandchildren.
Her unconditional love will leave an everlasting grief and unfillable void for her children, Charles “Chick” Mertz, Tina Mertz Ladd, and Michelle Mertz, who were with her almost every day of their lives. Her legacy will shine with the eternal love they have for her.
A private burial will be held at All Saints Cemetery, Memorial donations welcomed to saintmonicasunbury.org, spotlightpa.org, or stjude.org To celebrate her, please cheer on Notre Dame, watch a Vivien Leigh movie, dance to Elvis, laugh so loudly that the entire restaurant can hear you, or pick up the phone and call someone just to talk. And please let us know as you do, because her children will only get through this with our and your memories of her.
Betty Jane Koletar Mertz – you are the love of our lives
