Ellen Jane Kramm Shuman, formerly of Watsontown and McEwensville, died March 8, 2015 at Geisinger Medical Center.

Jane was born November 1, 1920 to Oscar W. and Blanche Bryson Kramm in Lewis Township, Northumberland County. Glenn M. Shuman, her husband of 51 years, preceded her in death in 1996.

Jane was a lifelong learner and dedicated to the profession of nursing. She attended Gaston, a one-room school, for eight years and graduated from Turbotville – Lewis Vocational High School in 1938. In 1942 she graduated from the Geisinger Hospital School of Nursing in the first class to have a three-year program.  She was class president in both high school and nurses training.

After more training and classes in Pittsburgh, Jane returned to Geisinger as Supervisor of Pediatrics. She taught orthopedic and pediatric nursing to Cadet Corps nurses during World War II and received a Certificate of Commendation from the U.S government.

In 1961, Jane received a Bachelor of Science from Bloomsburg State College.

She served the Warrior Run Area School District as a nurse and social worker for 27 years, retiring in 1983. She remained a registered nurse for 64 years.

Jane was a dedicated member of the community, volunteering and serving with several groups. She was a life member of the Warrior Run Fort Freeland Heritage Society (WRFFHS). She was active in developing the society and served both on its Board of Directors and as president. In 1980 she co-chaired the first WRFFHS Heritage Days, which has become a nationally-recognized rural event. She was also a past member and president of the McEwensville Garden Club, which her mother-in-law started.  She received the Distinguished Historian award from the North Central Pennsylvanian Historical Society in 1986. In 2011 she received a community service award from the Shikelimo Chapter of the DAR, of which she became a member.

Jane enjoyed life and was happiest when with her family. She liked her many friends and loved her home and garden, traveling, doing genealogy research, writing for the benefit of family, reading and being an American citizen.

Jane is survived by son Glenn Shuman and his wife Janet of Lewisburg; daughter Sarah (Sally) Krimmel of Watsontown and daughter Pamela Cooper and husband Andrew of McEwensville; granddaughters Brenda Semke, husband Eric and children Luke, Zackary and Mia of Dillsburg; Meghan Jugder, husband Bold and daughter Bayarmaa of Takoma Park, MD; Rebekah Krimmel of Washington, DC; Anna Jane Cooper of Buffalo, NY; and grandson John Cooper of Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia.
