Ethel Maud Shutt

Ethel Maud Shutt, 93, of Allenwood, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born June 12, 1921 in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, a daughter of the late John and Ethel Mary (Batten) Williams. In March 1945, during World War II, Ethel met her future husband, Raymond E. Shutt, whose naval ship resupplied in Australia. They met at a dance hosted by the Australian Red Cross. Ethel and Raymond got engaged in August of 1945. On June 2, 1947 Ethel left Sydney, Australia and came to the United States, where she and Raymond were married on July 19, 1947. Together they celebrated 60 years of marriage and made two return visits to Australia before his death on January 15, 2008.
While living in Australia, Ethel worked as a waitress and for the Australian Red Cross. Once in the United States, Ethel and Raymond spent over 20 years living in the East End of Williamsport before moving to Allenwood in 1972. Ethel would become a US Citizen May 9, 1996.
She was a member of the Allenwood Presbyterian Church.
Ethel enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, baking and spending time with her family.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Evelyn Shutt, of Watsontown and Eugene and Sharon Shutt, of Montoursville; a daughter, Sharon Rhinehart, of Lancaster; a brother, Joe Williams, of Australia; six grandchildren, Donald Rhinehart III, Robert Rhinehart, Richelle Little, Kristine Allison, Michael Shutt and Melanie Shutt; eight great-grandchildren, Robert Rhinehart, Jr., Scottie, Tyler and Zackery Rhinehart, Katelyn and Alexis Shutt and Kolin and Kasen Allison; and one great-great-granddaughter, Lillianna Rhinehart.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by five brothers and four sisters.
Friends will be received from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral home, 308 Main St., Watsontown, where the funeral will be held at 1 p.m., with Rev. Robert Wallace, retired Methodist pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery.
