Fredric E. Schluter Jr. of Naples, FL and former long-time resident of Lewisburg, PA passed away peacefully on Friday, November 13, 2015.
Fred was known as “Sonny” by many of his childhood teachers. He attended high school at Phillips Exeter Academy (Class of 1943), and then attended Princeton University (Class of 1950) where he played on the Baseball and Ice Hockey teams.
Shortly after graduating high school in 1943 at the height of World War II, Fred enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 and volunteered for the highly dangerous submarine service, because he had heard that submariners got the best food. His submarine, the Dentuda, was captained by John McCain II, and saw action in the East China Sea in June and July 1945.
After college, Fred began a career in steel manufacturing at Garden State Forge in New Jersey. He then founded Keystone Forging Company of Northumberland, PA where he worked until his retirement.
Prior to retiring, Fred was also active in the Lewisburg Lions Club and the West Branch Manufacturers Association for many years.
Fred was most proud of his family: his wife of 49 years, Rose Marie; and seven children: Fred III, Jean, Elizabeth, Joe, Janet, Richard, and Christine, and their beautiful families. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by 17 grandchildren who were his pride and joy. He is also survived by his brothers William and Peter.
Preceding him in death were his brother John, and granddaughter, Amanda Yoder.
Friends are invited to call between 10 and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 106 South Second Street, Lewisburg, PA where the service will follow with the Rev. Dr. Nancy Schluter, officiating.
Burial with full military honors will follow in Lewisburg Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks you to consider donations in Fred’s name to your local Ronald McDonald House to remember his granddaughter.
