Gloria M. Bailey

Gloria M. Bailey, 90, formerly of Furnace Rd. , Lewisburg, died Sunday, September 21, 2014 at the Watsontown Health and Rehab Center .

She was born August 23, 1924 in Watsontown, the only child of the late Harold G. and Dorothy M. (Williams) Bailey.

Gloria attended Allenwood Grade School and graduated from Watsontown High School in 1942. She also attended the former Goodwin’s Business College , Williamsport .

Gloria began her career as a secretary for the founder of Devitt’s Camp Sanitarium , Allenwood, Dr. William Devitt. She also worked for his son, Dr. William Devitt, Jr., a surgeon and three other physicians at the same facility. In 1948 she became the secretary to Ralph E. McDermond at Quaker Manufacturing, Lewisburg. In 1958 Gloria became secretary and eventually station manager at the former Radio Station WITT, later known as WUNS and WUDO. During this time she took one year off to become secretary to the Dean of Bucknell, Dr. Karl Hartzell, she then returned to radio. In 1974 Gloria was employed as assistant to the comptroller at SEDA-COG. In 1976 she became secretary to the superintendant of schools in Lewisburg, until she retired in October 1986.

Gloria enjoyed reading, gardening, crocheting and collecting buttons. She was also fond of animals and birds.

Surviving are numerous cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday at the Uniontown Cemetery , Allenwood, with the Pastor Donald Snyder, of Trinity United Church of Christ, Watsontown, officiating.
