Helen M. “Susie” Hasskarl, 95, of Lewisburg, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village.
She was born April 1, 1919 in Bethlehem, a daughter of the late Raymond and Adele (Rau) Mohn. On May 23, 1942 she married the Rev. Frederick Hasskarl, who preceded her in death February 9, 2003.
Susie was a 1937 graduate of Allentown High School.
She was active in three Lutheran parishes her husband served in Pennsylvania: St. Paul’s, Annville, Emanuel, Philadelphia and St. Mark’s, Williamsport. She was currently a member at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisburg.
Earlier in life, she worked as a trained nurse’s aide in the Lebanon and Abington Hospitals. Later, Susie worked as a secretary at Lycoming College and the former Williamsport Area Community College, now Pennsylvania College of Technology. She served on the board for Disadvantaged Children, Philadelphia and the YWCA board, Williamsport. She volunteered at the Venice Eye Center, Florida, the Susquehanna Visitors Bureau, Lewisburg, the Eastern County Distribution Center, Lewisburg and Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, where she resided.
Susie enjoyed reading and loved traveling, visiting countless countries and making two cross-country trips.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Heloisa Hasskarl, of Danbury, CT and Philip and Catherine Hasskarl, of Bradford, MA; four grandchildren, Andrew, William, Katherine and Jenna; four great-grandchildren Christian, Belle, Ethan and Paige; a niece, Cheryl McCollum, of Hillsborough, NJ; and a special friend, Rine Whiney, of Lewisburg.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Elizabeth Huber.
Friends will be received from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 S. 3 rd St., Lewisburg where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. with her pastor, the Rev. William S. Henderson, officiating, assisted by Rev. Theodore Cockley, chaplain at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village. A luncheon will follow the service.
Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the former Mounds Cemetery, now Wildwood Cemetery, Williamsport.
