Jack E. Solomon

October 16, 1928 — May 8, 2020

Jack E. Solomon, 91, of Lewisburg, died on Friday, May 8, 2020, from complications of a stroke.

He was born October 16, 1928 in New Berlin, a son of the late Elmer O. and Mildred E. (Shannon) Solomon.  On January 9, 1951 he married his high school sweetheart, the former June D. Catherman, who preceded him in death.  Together they celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Jack was a 1948 graduate of Lewisburg High School.  In 2007, he and June received the Lewisburg High School Distinguished Alumni Award. He was an active member of his alumni community and loved connecting with his classmates.

After high school, he served honorably as a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  Jack worked for 45 years at Citizen’s Electric and retired as Vice President of Customer Service.

Jack was a proud and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He was known to everyone as selfless, patient, and kind.  There’s nothing he loved more than time with family.  Jack and June enjoyed traveling and country line dancing.  He was an avid outdoorsman and liked to hunt and fish. He was a disciplined athlete his entire life.  He played basketball and baseball in high school, and more recently enjoyed playing racquetball, swimming, and lifting weights at Bucknell University.  Jack was a big fan of Penn State and loved hosting tailgates for Nittany Lion football games.  He was a “Jack of all Trades”, handy around the house, and dabbled in winemaking and genealogy.

Jack was a member of the Kratzer-Dull American Legion Post 182, Charity Lodge No. 144 F&AM, and Trout Unlimited.  He served on the Lewisburg School Board for over 20 years.  He also volunteered on the Lewisburg Area Joint Sewer Authority, the P.I.A.A. District Committee, and the advisory committee for interscholastic sports for Lewisburg School District.

Surviving are his children, Kathy Roach and her husband, Donald, of Alburtis, PA, Michael Solomon and his wife, Lori, of Orlando, FL and Gay Melnick and her husband Richard, of Brookeville, MD; four grandchildren, Sarah Hernandez, Tyler Roach, Brett and Kyle Melnick; and two great-grandchildren, Aidan and Joshua Roach.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brother, Donald Solomon.

Jack was a member of Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisburg.

A private service with full military honors will be held in New Berlin Cemetery.

To honor Jack’s commitment to children’s education, the family suggests contributions in his memory be made to the Lewisburg Children’s Museum, 815 Market St., #14, Lewisburg, PA 17837.

The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg.
