Jack L. Whalen, 93, of 3750 Rt. 220, Hughesville, died Friday, January 22, 2016 at the Valley View Nursing Center, Montoursville.
Born September 1, 1922 in Sunbury, he was a son of the late Paul and Helen (Clewell) Whalen.
During his adolescence Jack attended the Gerard College for Boys in Philadelphia. He moved to Muncy for his 10th grade year and graduated from Muncy High School in 1940. While there Jack excelled in sports and later in life was inducted into the Muncy High School Sports Hall of Fame.
On June 27, 1940 he married his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Anna Hill, who survives. Together they celebrated 75 years of marriage. In 1942 Jack joined the US Navy and served honorably for four years during World War II.
He worked at Jones and Laughlin Steel, Muncy for 33 years. After his retirement in 1978, Jack became a full time antique dealer, working out of his home and from local shops in Muncy, Montoursville, and Lewisburg. He and his wife also enjoyed traveling to antique shows throughout Pennsylvania. With a love of antiques, he spent his whole life collecting them and finally retired in 2013.
Jack was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Pennsdale. He was also a member of the Roland Ritter American Legion Post 268, Muncy, where he enjoyed playing cards with his friends.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Dale Anderson, of Muncy; three granddaughters, Lucy McHugh and her husband, Dan, Melissa Hampton and Beth Donovan and her husband, David; and four great-grandchildren, Emma McHugh, Malaena and Mallory Hampton and Liam Donovan.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, June Pinkerton and Pauline Strein.
Friends will be received from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy, where the funeral will be held at 1 p.m., with his pastor the Rev. Kevin St. Martin, officiating.
Burial will be held privately in the Muncy Cemetery.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 658 Village Rd., Pennsdale, PA 17756.
