James H. "Buckwheat" Springman

James H. “Buckwheat” Springman, 92, of 228 Musser Lane, Muncy died Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the Susquehanna Health Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center at the Muncy Valley Hospital.

Born May 27, 1923 in Montoursville, he was a son of the late Elmer A. and Dorothy L. Springman. He and his wife, the former Jean Lucille Shoemaker were married 63 years before her death October 28, 2009.

Jim was a 1941 graduate of Muncy High School. He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II in the South Pacific, Philippines and Aleutian Islands. Jim was the oldest surviving Navy Seabee of his class in Lycoming County.

Jim worked as a crane operator with the Pennsylvania and Central Railroads. He also was the owner and operator of Springman’s Christmas Tree Farm and Nursery.

Jim was a member of the Muncy Baptist Church. He was a member of the Muncy Lodge #299, F & AM, the National, State and Ponoma Granges, and the Glenn Sharrow Post #35 American Legion, Hughesville. His involvement with 4H Clubs, FFA and other agricultural groups in high school, led to his active membership with the Lycoming County Fair and Showmen Association. He started as a groundskeeper in 1972 and through time became Vice-President.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Belinda S. and James L. Frey, of Muncy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his stepmother, Maizie Motter.

Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Robert W. Rice, officiating, assisted by his nephew, Pastor Shawn McNett.

Burial with full military honors will follow in Montoursville Cemetery.

The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County, P. O. Box 3232, Williamsport, PA 17701 or to Trinity United Church of Christ, 602 Main St., Watsontown, PA 17777.
