Jean L. Bowersox, 92, of Lewisburg, died Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

She was born November 12, 1924 in Lewisburg, the daughter of the late John Sr. and Millie (Bennett) Derr. Jean and her husband, Selin “Sid” Bowersox, who survives, were married July 17, 1944 and celebrated 72 years together.

Jean attended a one room school at Reed’s corner and Lewisburg school district.  Earlier in life, she worked for the former shirt factory and Royal Imprints, both of Lewisburg. Jean also worked as a caregiver for John and Edith Fetherston, who once owned the Packwood House.

She was an active member for over 70 years at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Lewisburg, where she volunteered with meals and taught bible school.

Jean was a member of the Order of the Amaranth, Milton.  She also enjoyed her bible study group and hosted for many years in her own home.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three children, Paula Sassaman and her husband, Larry, of Lewisburg, Deborah Rice, of Lewisburg and John Bowersox, of Riverview, Fl; eight grandchildren, Chris Sassaman and his wife, Misty, Shawn Sassaman and his wife, Jennifer, Johanna Geyer and her husband, Jesse, Amy Zimmerman and her husband, Bryan, Lee Rice and his companion, Robin Cruey, Kevin Rice, Joshua Bowersox, and his wife, Courtney and Abbey Bowersox and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by seven brothers, Ralph, in infancy, Marshall, Sterling, Melvin, Kenneth, Benton and John, Jr.; two sisters, Eleanor Parson and Helen Cornelius; and one grandson, Eric Sassaman.

Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s United Church of Christ 1050 Buffalo Rd., Lewisburg, followed by the funeral at 11.

Burial will follow in Lewisburg Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s United Church of Christ 1050 Buffalo Rd., Lewisburg, PA 17837 to benefit music or children’s activities.

The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 106 S. Second St., Lewisburg.
