Joanne Lowry Shannon, 88, of Lewisburg, formerly of the Honesdale area, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015 at the Watsontown Health and Rehab Center.
She was born June 20, 1926 in Waymart, a daughter of the late Welles Norwood and Thelma May (Drake) Lowry. She and her first husband, James E. Burns, were married 40 years before his death Nov. 11, 1991. Joanne and her second husband, F. Pressly Shannon, celebrated 17 years of marriage before his death Nov. 2, 2011.
A graduate of Lewisburg High School, Joanne did her undergraduate studies at Smith College and received her Master’s degree from Marywood College. Earlier in life she worked at the Library of Congress in Washington DC. Joanne assisted in the operation of the family dairy business, Silver Crest Dairy Farm in Waymart. She retired from Stourbridge Elementary, Honesdale, where she was an elementary school teacher and librarian.
Joanne was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg. She was also a member of the Lewisburg Chapter of P. E. O. and the Susquehanna Valley Chorale. Joanne was an active volunteer at the Public Library for Union County.
Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, W. Norwood Jr. and Shirley Bechtel Lowry, of Wernersville, PA; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, June 20 in the Lewisburg Cemetery. Officiating will be her pastor, Rev. James C. King.
