Lewisburg

Marianne Torza, née Wien, passed away peacefully in the presence of her loved ones on January 21st 2025 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

She was born on the family farm in Kraplau (Germany) now Kraplewo (Poland) on December 20th, 1938. In early 1945 with her mother and three young siblings, she escaped the Russian advance to West Germany (Bavaria).

In November 1951 with her family, she emigrated to Ontario, Canada. In 1961, she completed her bachelor's degree in literature at the University of Toronto and was awarded the Woodrow Wilson scholarship to complete her graduate studies at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She opted to stay at the University of Toronto where she earned a Master's Degree and a PhD in modern German literature. After emigrating to Princeton (NJ) in 1970, she taught German at Westminster Choir College. Later, she worked at Bucknell University to promote the Study Abroad programs for which she received the Burma Bucknell Award (2004) for "International and Intercultural Understanding".

Her life was dedicated to her three children (Mark, Anthony and Megan). She was also enthusiastic about promoting the Arts. Among many volunteer efforts, she worked in the local Elementary school as "The Picture Lady," where she taught appreciation of Art and Art History to children. Her positive attitude, kindness and love of life will be missed by all of us who lived, loved and worked with her.

The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg.
