Mary Ann Doyle

December 6, 1943 — June 19, 2024

Muncy

Mary Ann Doyle, 80, of Muncy, died on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at her home.

She was born December 6, 1943 to the late Joseph and Catherine (Fay) Ernst in Queens, NY.

Mary graduated from The Mary Louis Academy in Queens, NY. She then earned a degree in history from St. John’s University, Brooklyn, NY. Mary had to attend the Brooklyn campus rather than the new Queens campus so as to major in history. After graduation she received a Graduate Assistantship at St. John’s for further studies in history. That is where she met her husband Dan. Mary had a passion for helping people, especially children. Before getting married, she was a foster-care caseworker for Catholic Charities in Brooklyn, NY.

Mary and Dan were married in 1969 and shared a loving life together for 54 years. They were blessed by the birth of their daughters, Ann (Mort) Neely and Catherine Doyle. Their grandson, James Neely later further enriched their lives.

Mary loved learning. She received Master’s degrees from Bloomsburg University (reading) and Bucknell University (school psychology). Mary also enjoyed helping others to learn. She taught as an adjunct faculty at Bucknell (reading education) and the Pennsylvania College of Technology (psychology).

She applied her graduate studies at the South Williamsport Area School District as a Reading Specialist and then as an Instructional Support Teacher. After Mary retired, she worked part-time at Diakon Family Life Services and volunteered with a continuing focus on serving others.

She was a Volunteer Chaplain Assistant at UPMC Muncy and Muncy Place. As a Mercy Associate of the Sisters of Mercy, she began visiting a woman who resides at the State Correctional Institution Muncy who wanted to become a Mercy Associate. The two quickly became friends.

Mary was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, Muncy, and was the first coordinator at her church, which joined with other churches in Lycoming County, to form Family Promise of Lycoming County – a program that provides housing, food, and other services to families in the county who are experiencing homelessness. Mary stayed with this commitment until her health interfered.

Mary’s family extends thanks to the staff at UPMC Palliative Care, Home Health Care, and Family Hospice as well as the caregivers at Comfort Keepers who supported Mary at home during her extended journey.

Mary was predeceased by her parents and her brother Joseph Ernst. She is survived by her immediate family.

Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, June 24, at the Church of the Resurrection, 75 Musser Lane, Muncy, where Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. with her pastor, Father Sean Carpenter, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Muncy Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Family Promise of Lycoming County, PO Box 1052, Williamsport, PA 17701.

The family is being assisted by Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy.
