Michael Joseph Delaney

March 16, 1938 — January 26, 2022

Winfield

Michael Joseph Delaney, 83, of Winfield, PA died Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at home, as he wished, with his sister Marita and his beloved dog, Casey, by his side.

Michael was born in Scranton, on March 16, 1938, to William Edward Delaney, originally from Pittston, and Marion Rafferty Delaney from Scranton.

He graduated from the University of Scranton with a degree in business in1960 and went into the Army as a lieutenant and served proudly for four years in Germany. He was very proud of his military service and was a member of several veterans’ organizations.

Michael worked in the cosmetics industry for Kolmar in Port Jervis, NY, when his military service ended. He then took a position with Koscot in Orlando, FL, in 1968 managing their cosmetics line and worked there until his retirement. He also did private consulting work.

On October 17, 1970 he married the former Myra O’Neill.  Myra was originally from Newfoundland, Canada, but moved to Orlando, FL, where they met on the first day Michael began work at Koscot. Myra was an executive secretary there and they fell in love immediately and married a few years later.  They lived in Longwood, FL, until about 10 years ago when they moved to Winfield.  His beloved wife, Myra, died on June 12, 2016.  She was the youngest of 11 children so Michael has many relatives in Canada.

He was a devout Roman Catholic until his death. He was a member of Saint Monica’s Catholic Church in Sunbury.  Michael generously supported many different charities up until his death including organizations to benefit the religious, poor, children, the military and animals. He had a great love of animals and particularly his dog, Casey, who was the second love of his life.

He was devoted to his nieces and nephews and lived next to his niece, Marita Gilroy Mannello and her husband, Raymond.  Marita devoted herself to his care daily since he moved from Florida. Her husband Ray did countless acts of kindness for Michael. He also had four other nieces, Kate Gilroy Walling, Margaret Gilroy Hilkert, Betsy Gilroy Karpinski and Marigrace Gilroy Canfield, who live locally and helped him immensely over the years.  He had eight other nieces who do not live locally and 6 nephews. Michael’s extended family cared for him and helped to care for his wife, Myra, for over 20 months until her death, allowing him to keep her at home where she died.

He loved all of his nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren with all his heart. He was particularly close to his great grandnephew, Trapp Moser, who was the son of Marita Manello’s daughter, his grandniece, Meghan Gilroy Moser. Trapp brought him countless hours of joy from his birth as did his brothers Garret and Gabriel. Trapp is three years old.

Michael is survived by two sisters, Marita Delaney Wojdak and her husband, Joseph, and Mary Katherine “Kathy” Delaney.  He is survived by 18 nieces and nephews as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews and great grandnieces and great grandnephews on the Delaney side of the family. He is also survived by his four sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great grandnieces and great grandnephews on the O’Neill side in Canada.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by one brother, Paul Delaney and his wife, Claire Keenan Delaney; one sister, Margaret Delaney “Margie D” Gilroy and her husband, Richard, and their two sons, Patrick and Michael; another nephew, John Michael Stanilka, son of Kathy; and seven of Myra’s siblings in Canada.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5 by Father Fred Wangwe, AJ at Saint Monica’s Catholic Church, 109 Market Street, Sunbury, PA, followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery at 172 All Saints Road, Elysburg, PA followed immediately by a luncheon at the Pine Barn Inn, 43 Pine Barn Place, Danville, PA. Michael asked me to tell everyone that all are welcome with love from him who takes the time out of their busy lives to attend the celebration.

Almond Tree Home Health Care and Evangelical Hospice provided the wonderful support and care that allowed Michael to remain at home as he wished.

The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg.
