Nicholas Mills Edgerton

January 14, 1964 — November 16, 2020

Family and friends mourn the passing of Nicholas Mills Edgerton of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

He was born January 14, 1964 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, the beloved son of Mills F. Edgerton, Jr. and the late Marianne Edgerton.

Nick graduated from Lewisburg High School, earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University and master’s degree in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University. He was a professional educator who started his career as a teacher and Dean of Students at the Kildonan School, a boarding school for dyslexic children in Amenia, New York. There he established himself as a tireless advocate of children and adolescents with learning differences, beloved by students and faculty alike.

After Nick’s marriage to Elizabeth Frederick he served successfully as Head of Upper School at the Mclean School in Potomac, Maryland. Nick moved his now young family to Williamstown, Massachusetts in the fall of 2000 where he was appointed Head of School at Pine Cobble School. Nick implemented a program emphasizing the school’s mission of maintaining scholastic excellence, enhancing the beauty of its campus, and building upon the rich traditions of the school. As the father of two young children, Lily and Will, he joyfully dedicated himself to their upbringing and well-being. He was both proud and delighted when his son, Will, graduated from Pine Cobble in 2010

Nick and his family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2010 where he continued to pursue opportunities as a school administrator and leader. He was a proud Brown alumnus who was happy to interview many prospective students over the years. Assuredly, the high point of his involvement with the university came when the family received news that his daughter, Lily, had been accepted to Brown in 2017. Nick was a stickler for grammar, manners and propriety, and carried with him an encyclopedia of knowledge from the history of royal families to Elvis Presley. He was bright, had a wonderful sense of humor and was always fast with an amusing quip. As an administrator he dedicated himself to knowing each student and their family and he could always be counted on to send thoughtful, handwritten notes to parents needing assistance. He knew the importance of forming strong relations with alumni and schools, and though Nick would freely admit his hesitancy about presenting before large groups, his wisdom, humor, politeness and grace would always win over any crowd.

Nick is survived by his children, William Frederick Edgerton and Elizabeth Mills Edgerton, his former wife Elizabeth Edgerton, his father Mills Edgerton, Jr. of North Conway, New Hampshire, his brother Michael Edgerton and his wife Lisa of Guilford, Connecticut, along with numerous nephews and nieces.

Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family in the Lewisburg Cemetery.

The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg.
