Oliver D. Sones

Oliver D. Sones, 72, of 92 Industrial Park Road, Muncy, died Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.

Born November 3, 1943 in Pine Township, Columbia County, he was a son of the late Carl H. and Leona P. (Brown) Sones.  He married the former Mary Jane Shuman on October 5, 1963. Together they celebrated 52 years of marriage.

Oliver attended the Muncy School System. He worked for William Sones, Harry Vandine and Harold Bishop as a farm laborer during his school years. Oliver then worked for Earl D. Houseknecht as a Truck Driver hauling cans of milk for Dairymen’s League and also drove tractor trailer. In 1969 he purchased a truck of his own, working for several different companies. Eventually Oliver hauled produce for his produce stand and a Texaco Gas Station at Clarkstown. Years later he became a dispatcher of trucks for W. C. McQuaide till retiring.

In 2004 Oliver opened Sones Farm and Home Museum. He enjoyed going to auctions to purchase unusual items which he displayed in the museum. Oliver also enjoyed putting his Antique Trucks in parades and car shows.

He had been an EMA Coordinator for Muncy Creek Township and Muncy Township and was a past member of the Clarkstown Fire Company and Muncy Kiwanis Club. Oliver was a member of the International Motor Truck Gathering, Shortway Chapter of the ATCA, East Lycoming Historical Society and Muncy Historical Society.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, William O. (Susan) Sones, of Muncy; a daughter, Juanita K. (Pete) Keefer, of New Columbia; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren with three more on the way; a brother, Cloyd (Sandy) Sones, of Turbotville; a sister, Connie Yonkin, of McEwensville; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by two brothers, Delbert Sones and Larry Sones in infancy.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Interstate Auction Hall at Sones’s Farm, 92 Industrial Park Rd., Muncy, where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Joani Yagel and Charles Kindlimann, family friends.

Burial will follow in the Pine Center Cemetery, Columbia County.

The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Lycoming Unit, 1948 E. Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701.
