Theodore "Ted" Chappen

Theodore “Ted” Chappen, 64, of New Berlin died Thursday, September 17, 2020, peacefully at his home in New Berlin, Pennsylvania.

Born April 2, 1956 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Perry Chappen and Juana (Colovos) Chappen, who survives. On June 18, 1983 he married the former Margaret Wetmore, who survives, at Bucknell University’s Rooke Chapel.

Ted was a 1974 graduate of Scranton Central High School where he served as senior class president. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1978 and received his Masters Degree in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He was very involved in student life, serving as a Resident Head at Bucknell and eventually as Director of Student Housing at The University of Chicago, forming many dear friends and memories in the process.

A passionate teacher for over 30 years, he taught Philosophy, Ethics and Logic at The University of Chicago, Lycoming College, Penn College, and for more than 20 years at Susquehanna University.

Throughout his life, he was active with the Boy Scouts of America, achieving Eagle Scout status in his youth, working at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, and becoming a dedicated scout leader for his son’s troop. His devotion to local causes included serving as president of the New Berlin Home School Association, board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters, past president for the SUN Area Habitat for Humanity, and a local soccer referee. He was a very supportive member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Lewisburg, serving several terms on the vestry and as junior and senior warden.

Ted will be remembered as a fierce debater, a charismatic personality, and a devoted son, brother, father, husband and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Margaret Chappen of New Berlin, daughter Eleni Chappen and her husband, David Cordero of Illinois, son Jack Chappen and partner Michelle Merica of Maine, mother Juana Chappen of Florida, and sister Pamela Oren and her husband, Dr. Jess Oren, of Catawissa.
