Walter “Wally” Lechniak, 89, of 243 Main St., South Williamsport, died Monday, September 17, 2018 at UPMC Susquehanna, Williamsport.
Born March 26, 1929 in Elysburg, he was a son of the late Paul and Mary (Tarcenski) Lechniak. On May 15, 1953 he married the former Anna Nemeth, who survives. Together they celebrated 65 years of marriage.
Walter was a 1948 graduate of Kulpmont High School. He attended the Coyne T.V. Trade School, Chicago. Walter served honorably with the U.S. Army 4th Signature Battalion during the Korean War. He began his career at Lycoming Cable, where he worked from 1955 to 1963. Walter worked at the former Neyharts TV and Appliance Center, Williamsport, from 1963 to 1988. He retired from the former Trimtex, Williamsport, where he worked from 1988 to 1995.
Walter was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, South Williamsport and served as the president of the Holy Name Society. He was also a former Boy Scout Troup leader.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons and daughters-in-law, David J. and Christine M. Lechniak and Michael W. and Patricia M. Lechniak, all of South Williamsport; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Brent L. Smithgall, of Williamsport; brother, Anthony Lechniak, of Oakland, NJ; and five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy, where a rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 800 West Central Avenue, South Williamsport, with Rev. James Tracy, officiating.
Burial with full military honors will follow in the Resurrection Cemetery, Montoursville.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Greater PA Chapter, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601 or online at alz.org.
